Merry Beltane!
Yesterday we were ruthless! We had 1-800-Junk come out and get rid of all the crap in the garage, plus the bin of discarded construction materials that has been in back of the house for 2+ years. I feel so much better...we have a garage again! For real this time, not just hanging on to Mom's crap that, let's face it, is never going to be worth the trouble it would be to sell. The company will donate what they can, recycle what they can, and it's out of our lives. Yay!!!!! We filled the entire truck o_0 This is what happens when you live in/ use as storage the same house for 25 or so years.
The guys they sent were really nice. They were patient when I needed to go through something, non-judgmental about some of the corner-of-the-garage monster messes, helped get heavy boxes off top shelves and made the whole thing an enjoyable experience. They even swept up! I wasn't sure if doing it this way would be worth it, but whooo boy was it ever! I made myself make snap decisions, based on does it mean anything? Have I missed it in the ten years its been since I saw it? and I don't regret a thing.
I will NOT turn into a hoarder like my Mom. I kept childhood things that had meaning. My records. Papers and cards, photos and flyers from my hayday of clubbing. Lots of nifty neat cards from Wendy-lady! (Bat-cat, fighting for the Goth Way) lol. Pics to remind me what will happen/ has happened if I stop going to the gym. (shudderack) Plus I found my Addams Family Barbie! *squee* I now have room to pack up books and move them out to the garage. Spooky has one side and I have the other, and we'll have room to actually park a car in there.
Imagine. A car in the garage. Huh.

and it is, among other things. :)
So, I received two most desired kitchen implements from my super duper awesome husband (I love saying that). Today was spent in kitchen nirvana. A Staub La Cocette 8qt pot (in grenadine) rendered up a lunch of mussels steamed in white wine and butter over pasta. I. Love. That. Pot. I also love fresh mussels for 6 bucks at Harris Teeter - 2lbs. Whee! I now have lunch for at least two days. I feel impending shrimp boils, and soups and stews of all sorts. Oh! And I still have that frozen turkey carcass from thanksgiving. OhOh! Braised kale or greens...lots of garlic. No Knead Bread!!
At least this is moderately healthier than baking cupcakes every other day.
Tomorrow I want to make a vegetable gratin. Today I prepped the veg...crook neck squash and zucchini at 1/4th inch, tomatoes at 1/2...my knife skills are not that great. Enter the Zyliss Easy Slicer!! Mowed through that shit in under 7 minutes, no joke. I am amazed. I've tried other mandoline type things (Oxo, I'm looking at you) and they never worked as promised. But this thing rocks...and folds up small to store! Though someone please explain to me how you're supposed to use the stupid hand guard on a zucchini you want in rounds, not planks. Sheesh. Here's hoping I don't take my thumb off. Small bits of thumb...well, that's just a normal day.
In other news, Tasha, my precious kitteh with the bad kidneys, seems to be doing much better on her new diet. I was crocheting today with her on my lap as usual, but she was all fun and games! "Hey, what's that string?" "Mine! Mine!" and my fav, "You weren't trying to use that (hand, needle, stitch marker bead) were you? Nom Nom." Wanna see what I've been making? Here's one. Feel free to look at the rest, but you better like yarn.
In other news, I really need Leopard. And an external hard drive, before getting Leopard. Feh. |

So, Christian and I are getting married on Saturday.
*squeegrin*
We'll have a party in a few months to celebrate, but as larger things require time to plan, and we are basically damned tired of waiting, we'll be having a very small private ceremony. There are so many of you that I hope will celebrate with us at a later date!

My pirate name is: Black Anne Bonney Like anyone confronted with the harshness of robbery on the high seas, you can be pessimistic at times. You can be a little bit unpredictable, but a pirate's life is far from full of certainties, so that fits in pretty well. Arr! Get your own pirate name from piratequiz.com.part of the fidius.org network |

Just a quick THANK YOU! to the kind folks who put together Return of the Bats at Nelson's on Saturday. I had a great time and I really hope we'll be able to do it again! It was fun digging out all my old accoutrements...and discovering that my pointy boots are a LOT more comfy than they used to be. The music was fantastic! Great job, you guys! |

Trader Joe's Dark Chocolate Sea Salt Caramels.
That is all.
-------
No, wait, that's not all! Peppermint Jo Jo's (kicks oreo in the ass!) and Wintry Blend coffee (with peppercorns and whole clove!).
Seriously...how the hell have I survived without this store? Wine for $4.99...and it's not swill! It's even organic. Artichoke tortellini. Pumpkin butter. All of it swoon worthy.
I'm in love.
And I need 6 more boxes of the caramels. |

I was looking forward to seeing Spooky's mom today, but we've postponed dinner till sunday, resulting in a lovely relaxed non-thanksgiving day. I get to eat leftover pizza, do laundry, and indulge my fetish for The dreamy Prince Lotor...total season 4 Voltron immersion. Muahahaha.
Yup...pretty much the perfect way to spend the day before Black Friday. |

so to speak.
Once again I've fractured the pinkie toe on my left foot. Haven't done it since 1994, so I guess I can't complain too much, but there will be no walking...or going out, dammit...today.
Dammit. |

Yesterday was fantastic. As close to foodie heaven as you can get in Charlotte.
To start from the beginning, I almost didn't go. I have a ton of stuff to do this weekend, and being cramped at a crowded street festival and 500 yards away from one of my culinary heroes really wasn't on the top of the list. But the desire to see Alton Brown, and curiosity won out. I called bloodkitty, we hashed out a plan of sorts, and I was off.
Side tangent - I stopped at Heroes to pick up my "bag". Good lord. I really should get down there more often than once every three months. But I discovered Marvel's Fairy Tales (Spiderman and X-men) and am very pleased, though I haven't had time to read them yet. I love authors riffing off fairy tales. Makes me happy when it's done well.
OK...so we get to Shout. First off, free parking. Huh? In downtown?? For an event? Unheard of, but true. We saw a few cars in the deck with Star Wars stuff all over them. We wondered if there was another convention we hadn't heard about. We moved on.
We got our tokens and tucked in. We sampled from many different restaurants in the area...Pewter Rose was there (yummy shrimp and corn pudding) and Savannah Red, Sonoma, Zebra, and quite a few others I can't recall. Stand outs were Oceanaire (http://www.theoceanaire.com/location/index.asp?id=12) with Cuban Shrimp, an excellent Lobster and Shrimp Ceviche with a plantain chip, and omg *dies* BBQ Oysters. What impressed me was not only the taste of their offerings, but you could tell they spent a lot of time taking the venue into account. Unlike some of the other places, Oceanaire's stuff was easy to eat standing up holding a plate and balancing stuff in your hands. Very much appreciated. Also 131 Main (http://www.131-main.com/) with a wonderful Grilled Artichoke with Remoulade (difficult to eat one handed, but darned tasty) and a standout Key Lime Pie. The crust was insanely good, with large hunks of pecans and a super tart filling. Also, there was wine. But really, a lot of details are lost in the OMG AB haze in my brain.
And suddenly, we hear the Star Wars theme. On the main stage, there are dancing short skirted Leia's with light sabers, Darth Vader hanging out by the oven, Boba Fett chilling by the fridge, and more storm troopers of various types than I can shake a stick at comfortably. Explains the cars in the parking lot. A chef comes out, intro'd as one of the main organizers of Shout. "You may be wondering what Star Wars has to do with cooking....Absolutely nothing! But they said I'd get anything I wanted if I agreed to do a demo. I wanted Star Wars characters. So here we are." Too too funny.
And we wander. And we're discussing what to do next. And....my brain freezes. AB is standing RIGHT BEHIND bloodkitty's wholly UNSUSPECTING SHOULDER!!!!!!!!! He's cute! He's wearing sunglasses! He has his little bag of tokens jingling in his hand while he talks to his handler about where to go first!!!!! He's CUTE!!! eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!! And I reach out and TOUCH HIS ARM, and stammer something about excuse me Mr Brown sorry but Thanks for your show (see bloodkitty's journal later for a much more accurate portrayal, since I was fried) and he gave me this adorable little pleased half smile and said "Well thank you very much" but not at all like Elvis. And he walked away. And there was much squealing and laughing at me. And I went in search of cigs, and we talked to a security guard who wants to go to culinary school who gave me nasty menthols but better than nothing at all and I attempted calming down. Which did not go well.
And there was more wine, and we watched AB give a very entertaining talk on, imagine this, food. ;) Amen brotha! And if I hadn't agreed with almost everything he said, I would have asked a pertinent question, I'm sure. But he talked a lot about eating local, and you, not McD's are responsible for the state of your waistline, and water from a tap. And Chicken's Don't Have Fingers. All of this sparked great discussion between bloodkitty and myself for the rest of the evening.
And then there was no more AB. :(
And then the chef (Chris....something. dammit) from Oceanaire walked by and asked how I liked the oysters, and we had a lovely little chat. Nice guy, great food. On the way out we saw some of the chefs from 131 Main, and I stopped to compliment them on their pie, and we all (3 of them) had a nice little chat. Nice folks. I guess the pink hair made me a wee bit memorable, lol.
Srsly, Shout is the hands down best event I've ever attended in Charlotte. Even excluding the squee worthy-ness of attending the Evengelical Church of AB. For a grand total of $25 bucks, I ate at some of the best places in town, and met some great folks. Best deal in town. |
